A holistic approach to retirement

There are many things to consider when it comes to living well in retirement, breaking it down into these four areas can help to identify the possibilities.

These areas are interconnected and together they provide a holistic model to think more broadly about how you can help equip yourself for your next chapter.

Our team can help you understand your options, so you can make informed decisions that will have you living your best life in retirement.

The degree that retirees can meet their daily needs such as housing, food, clothing, utilities, and financial surprises, and have enough to afford to live a meaningful life.

Having enough to afford to live a meaningful life in retirement doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a financial plan in place, nor does it mean that you completely understand retirement products and are ready to go it alone.

We have a wide range of tools, services and products that provide members with the ability to maximize their financial outcomes in retirement, helping you make sound decisions with confidence to ensure that you’re on the right path.

We’ve got a retirement income product to help you retire your way

An Equip Super Retirement Income account can provide you with regular income payments to support you when you fully retire, and includes MyPension, a ready-made strategy for your retirement investments.

Thinking about retiring but not quite ready to give up work? An Equip Super Transition to Retirement Income account (TTR) allows you to cut back on your work hours, while also adding to – and drawing an income from – your super.

What about the Age Pension?

Social security, particularly the Age Pension, plays a large role in the lives of retirees. For many this will be the primary source of retirement income while for others it can act as financial security in the event their retirement savings are exhausted.

Depending on your financial circumstances you may be eligible for a variety of government benefits and subsidies.

Physical and mental health is a determining factor for living well in retirement. Research shows that staying active and independent is crucial to enjoying your post-work years.

And being happy as well as maintaining our cognitive abilities is equally important.

We want our members ‘healthspans’ to match their ‘lifespans’.

Forming positive and beneficial relationships with partners, children, family and neighbors within the community. Having a sense of belonging, communicating with other people and staying connected.

Social connections and positive family relationships play a major role in a fulfilling retirement. Conversely, many retirees worry about becoming more isolated as they get older.

Having a sense of belonging, communicating with other people, and staying connected boosts both our social wellbeing and our mental health.

Our members use their retirement as an opportunity to form new connections through volunteering, mentoring and taking on new hobbies or activities.

Thinking about volunteering?

Volunteering is a great way to remain connected with your community, boost your social wellbeing and even have purpose in retirement. There are many ways and forms of volunteering, it could be through joining an organization or things such as providing coaching or training to others.

Retirement is a great time to start a new hobby or activity

Joining a club or taking up a new hobby can be a great way to remain both physically and mentally active. Interacting with people helps improve your outlook and finding an activity that interests you can add purpose to your retirement. There are many options available for retirees and a great way to start is to think about what interests you and the level of commitment you’re willing to put in.

Ideas and options may include:

  • Signing up to your local gym or sports club
  • Joining a club, attending events or continuing education
  • Taking part in local council run activities
  • Becoming a coach or mentor

Experiencing a fulfilled retirement through giving (benefit of skills or experience to others), growing (trying new things or developing new skills) or enjoying (spending time doing what matters).

Happiness and longevity are intrinsically linked to a sense of purpose in retirement.

There are three main elements to purpose:

Giving - Finding ways to contribute to the community and put knowledge, skill and experience to work making a difference in the lives of others.

Growing - Trying new things, developing new abilities, meeting personal goals (intellectual, artistic, athletic) or deepening spirituality and sense of self.

Enjoying - Spending time alone or with family and friends doing things that provide meaning and pleasure such as recreation, hobbies, work, travel, entertainment and get-togethers.

Purpose is an individual thing, but most importantly we want our members to experience retirement as the next chapter of their journey through life.
