Are you retired, active, and have a love of pets? Good news. There’s a potential career in doggy-day-care available to you.
According to PetCloud, an online service that links pet owners with sitters, older Australians are clear favourites with their community. The company said that while 3% of its members are aged 55-plus, they nab 20% of all pet sitting jobs. They’re also earning more money than their younger counterparts.
Base rates for pet sitting start at around $25 per day, but depending on requirements, and special needs, the rates and services can be negotiated between individuals. That might mean a daily walk, a taxi service for a pet appointment, or extended holiday stays.
The site is officially endorsed by the RSPCA and operates in a similar way to Airbnb, with a profile for each registered pet-sitter alongside a user rating system.
A fuzzy face service
Brisbane-based Petcloud founder Deborah Morrison created the business after she realised how long and difficult it was to find a pet-sitter for her toy cavoodle. Speaking with the Brisbane times she explained, “I was a web consultant and would have to fly interstate at short notice. I had a dog [but my family] lived on the other side of town and they weren't pet lovers. I didn't know anyone in the neighbourhood and couldn't find any services online.”
Deborah took matters into her own hands, and PetCloud has been helping link owners and careers ever since. But their real breakthrough was getting the official backing of the RSCPA.
"With our RSPCA partnership we are able to offer animal cruelty checks that no other platform can offer," Ms Morrison said. "It is also mandatory for our pet sitters to have a national police check if they are staying in pet owner's homes while they are away. We think it is really important that if you are opening your home to a stranger they need a background check.”
