Equip has embarked on an exciting community project - one which goes to the heart of helping members, their families and even some of the fund’s employers in Victoria's Gippsland region.
In association with our long-time community partner, Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network (BBLLLEN) and Melbourne-based not-for-profit organisation, Flying Robot School, Equip has underwritten the purchase of two advanced 3DR Solo drones to encourage more children in the region to undertake STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) studies.
The beauty of the two Equip MyFuture drones is more than skin deep. In the hands of the volunteer technical advisors from Flying Robot School, they are powerful teaching aids, able to be prepared for specific tasks using sophisticated Python programming language.
As such, they are an innovative extension of BBLLLEN’s remit to reach out to families across the region, mentoring young people to open new opportunities up for them through the Inspiring Young People program.
The Flying Robot School has committed to supporting four major government schools in Latrobe and Baw Baw in 2016 with a focus on training teachers, conducting one-day on-site school activities with selected young people in years 8 and 9 and to supporting any on-going project-based program in the school with possible links to local industry.
Training of both teachers and students with the flying robots will include instruction on how they work, how to fly them, how to extend them with sensors and how to write software to make them perform real-world projects. Flying Robot School technical volunteers will also support schools in integrating these skills into their education curriculum. Overall, the program will reach over 100 young people a year.
Equip sees support of the flying robots program as an extension of its 85-year relationship with the Latrobe Valley and surrounds, where it has for generations provided greater confidence and financial security in retirement.
Simultaneous with the robot flyer announcement, Equip confirmed it has added to its financial planning team and office facilities in Traralgon to ensure the community has access to the quality personal advice it needs, especially people approaching retirement.
