Get your life together in just 30 minutes
Here’s a photo of a cat. Did you know the average Australian spends 30 minutes* a week viewing animal videos online? Whether it’s fainting goats, mean cats, or doggos doing a bamboozle, there’s no shortage of distractions out there.
But if you’ve got time to watch animal videos you’ve got time to get your finances in order. Getting the basics right shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes of your time, and can add hundreds of thousands to your future bank balance. Here’s how to get started.
Check your superannuation investment option.
If you haven’t paid much attention to your super you’re probably in a default investment option. This is usually known as MySuper. Changing your options to a more growth driven option while you’re young can potentially add thousands to your account. To review and change your Equip investment option simply log into your account. You can see how different investment options will impact your future balance by checking out the Equip calculator.
Consolidate your super.
If you have more than one super account you’re paying hundreds of dollars extra in annual fees. That’s money that should be going towards your future. Consolidating your super only takes a couple of minutes. Fill out the form on the Equip site and hit return. We'll do all the hard work for you, including tracking down lost and forgotten money you may have in other funds.
Your employer has to set aside 9.5% of your income for superannuation. The reality is that probably isn’t enough. If you can afford to add a little extra each month, whether it’s $50 or $100, you’ll potentially pay less tax and have a much more comfortable retirement. You can see the difference it makes here. To get started just ask your payroll person at work to set it up.
Superannuation may not be as exciting as endless cat GIFS, but if you can set aside a little time to optimise your accounts you’ll be able to, 1. Retire earlier, 2. Have more time to watch animal videos in the future.
